…This time Laywoman Huang also seemed to have the mind of “Real practice and real proof” of that (school) teacher!
What our Buddha Vehicle lineage talks about is real practice and real proof, and what we most discard is exactly a show of words! In the conclusion of the Vamalakirti-Nivdesa Sutra, Shakyamuni Buddha in relating to Maitreya Bodhisattva spoke very clearly — novice Bodhisattvas of superficial roots most love a show of words, but long-practicing Bodhisattvas give first priority to real certification.
“Master Li, you certainly must help me!”
When Laywoman Huang called on the telephone last week, it was speaker Chen who took the call. “She says she already some 100,000 repetitions of the nine-word mantra, do you want to take the call?”
The temple personnel all know that in general, not to ask me to hear it, and not to arrange an interview, when someone asks about worldly affairs. It’s not that I’m not sympathetic to the masses, it’s just to give greater opportunities to allow practicing believers to benefit. What is the necessary condition for real compassion?
Although exhausting efforts to discriminate in this way, the temple personnel who arrange meetings have come across this: the caller, under the guise of “service to the people” first enquires about the operations manager of the hospital, and so cannot then ask people to go look for me. It has arrived that “Nepalese practice and ritual surpasses the four great holy mountains of China.” And, quite apart from her mentioning in passing the outstanding achievements of her clothing business chain, it got to the point of a whole tribe of left-home people from down south, and their question was whether it is OK for left-home people to go into business?
How many agonies are there among the people in the world? If the roots aren’t clear, what can it mean to be ruined? ((The first two roots of this are what has been mistranslated as “Humanistic” in “Humanistic Buddhism” -xp))
“Great Independence King Buddha!” When I took the phone call that time, I heard Laywoman Huang say: “Master Li, you certainly must help me!”
“What is the matter?” I asked.
Originally Laywoman Huang’s aunt had a problem with her lungs which caused her to stay in the hospital a long time, and afterwards she requested Laywoman Huang to assist her by using mantra to pour vital energy. The result was that the aunt got a little bit better, but sadly Laywoman Huang’s physical condition continued to deteriorate for two or three months, and she had pain in her five organs and six bowels from her chest to her back.
“There’s no way, I am begging you for the second and third times.”
“If I beg you, will you go away?”
“Please, you must help me.” Laywoman Huang on the telephone said at that point: “I really can’t find anybody to save me.”
“Where did you study before?”
“At a certain temple, I studied with a lama there…”
“In that case, why don’t you ask them to help you?
“I did! They just cursed me,” Laywoman Huang said urgently with a shaking voice: “but they didn’t help me at all, and afterwards, they just didn’t care about me anymore.” She was seriously and appropriately worried, but then with befitting hearty energy said: “Please, you certainly must save me, there already is no one who can help me.”
I couldn’t stand it anymore, so I shook my head, and said: “Then how did you know that I could help you?”
“I saw that article in the newspaper,” she answered: “I believed that you could — Master Li, whenever you have time, tell me, and I’ll come over.”
Probably not far off the mark? I thought. In reality, in that chat that just happened, the “sound dharani” already anihilated much of the force of karma, in that she raised the mind of repentance.
((Originally she had called up saying that she had problems, but she wanted to repeat the mantra 100,000 times before asking for help. But the practice itself couldn’t come to fruition until she felt sorry for whatever else went on with that lama. Hence Master Li’s attitude. The bad students for the bad teachers! -xp))
“Right now sit up straight holding the telephone in your left hand , and silently repeat the nine-word mantra…”
“Do you want to assist? Laywoman Huang said doubtfully: “Shouldn’t I come over?”
“No need, It will be all right to do it now!” three minutes later, I called over the telephone: “How do you feel now?”
“Very well. The karmic energy is already completely eliminated, rest assured!
Before hanging up the phone, I drove it home three times: “Remember, you can’t interrupt the nine-word mantra, tomorrow when you get up in the morning, you will be better!
The nine-syllable mantra “Namo Ben Shi Da Zi Zai Wang Fo” fundamentally takes hold of all the Buddha-names, dharani, and sutras in the Dharma Realm, and the total empowerment by the inconcievable collective vows of all the Buddhas, and it is the Dharma-nature’s basic reality by which the sentient beings in the Dharma Realm of the ten directions confirm entrance into the fruition of Buddhahood.
((Li Shan Dan has written elsewhere that he doesn’t care whether you take this or the name of Amitabha Buddha, which is equally all of the above, in my experience. Pure Land practitioners should never go to another mantra. We should consider this entire school as just one vast and on-going commentary on our pre-existing practice -xp))
The next day, the temple placed a telephone call to my home, and said: “Laywoman Huangs’s son just now came with a monetary contribution. He says that his mama is all better, and it’s really inconcievable. He also says his father recognizes that this is almost an impossible affair. And finally he says that the next time classes start, his mother wants to apply to study…”
There is no greater joy in human life than to continue one’s wisdom destiny without letup! ((Especially having been bagged on by lamas! -xp))
“We encounter plenty of these kinds of affairs.” In classes I have said more than once with feeling “In this world, never, but probably just in Taiwan, are there actually a lot of people wanting to practice Buddhism, but practically none of them find their (lineage) Gate.
What makes you sigh deeply even more is that there are many people who in their practice arrive at a crunch that they can’t break through, and before you know it in the blink of an eye, five years, or even ten, twenty, or thirty years have passed by. This really and simply cuts off people’s wisdom destiny.
((Tell me about it. It is no different in America. The problem with Zen is that the Asian tradition is clueless about how the crunches arrive, let alone how they present, in the American context. This is why we need broad Mahayana Buddhism in America. We need the mental flexibility, the humor, and yes, the pure blind stupid persistance in the face of anything at all, that is the mark of mainstream Mahayana -xp))
And the situation that is even more disasterous than this point is that if physical and mental problems arise right in the midst of practice, in the hands of the utterly planless, they are often left to their own devices.
((Bingo, again, Dharmo Dude nui loa! Taiwan isn’t the only place afflicted with bottom-feeding lamas. In fact, they prefer America, because it’s easier to evade actual Buddhists who are up to their deviltry here. -xp))
“Why can’t you find an orthodox Mahayana place when you first start to practice?” I often asked with strong feeling to the first fellow practitioners who came asking for help.
“I just basically don’t know which place is good, and which is not good!” They almost all had the same answer: “At that time we just had no way to discriminate…”
The really pitiable aspect in this is that, is it because mankind’s merit and wisdom are too insubstantial, and also that greed hatred, and stupidity are so heavy that the intention to practice itself is lost, causing piled-up problems?
The cultivation of name and fame easily guides men; but cutting off the wisdom destiny of the people , one falls into the spaceless hell.
These sixteen words can make many people have endless regret after the end of their life!
