<p>本月八日上午，高鼻深目的恒实法师(Rev. Heng Sure)踏进北京郊外的龙泉寺。这位美国<a href="http://www.drbachinese.org/">法界佛教总会</a>会长、<a href="http://www.drbataipei.org/drbbds/family/cttb.htm">万佛城</a>总住持来此，要以中文演讲为中国僧人、学员开示。</p>
<p>On 8 Nov 09, the high-nosed and deep-eyed Rev. Heng Sure set foot in Longquan Temple in the suburbs of Beijing.  This Chairman of America&#8217;s <a href="http://www.drba.org/">Dharma Realm Buddhist Association</a>, and the overall Abbot of the <a href="http://www.cttbusa.org/">City of Ten Thousand Buddhas</a>, came here to address the Chinese monks and students with a talk in Chinese. </p>
<p>    事情的缘起，是恒实法师此前在北京大学国际关系学院一场题为《佛教在西方的新面貌》的讲座，引起此间佛教界的兴趣与讨论。</p>
<p>The way this got started was that previously Heng Sure taught a course called &#8220;The New Face of Buddhism in the West&#8221; and it brought about the current interest and discussion in Buddhist circles.</p>
<p>    龙泉寺方丈、同时也是中国佛教协会副会长兼秘书长学诚法师得知后，特地邀恒实法师来到龙泉寺演讲。</p>
<p>When the Abbot of Longquan Temple, who is also at the same time the Vice Chairman and Executuve Secretary of the Chinese Buddhist Association, Xuecheng Fashi, found out about it, he invited Rev.  Heng Sure to speak at Longquan Temple.</p>
<p>    当天，正值观世音菩萨法会期间，恒实入乡随俗，讲观世音菩萨在各国的不同名号，很多感应事迹，从一个个故事中讲述观世音菩萨不同面的慈悲。</p>
<p>That day, which was right in the middle of the Guanyin Bodhisattva Dharma Assembly, Heng Sure did like the Romans in Rome, and talked about all the different names of Guanyin in different countries, with a lot of stories about (the Bodhisattva&#8217;s) response, and in each story, he described the different faces of Guanyin&#8217;s compassion.</p>
<p>    他以准确的中文表述道，修行人一个关键的问题在于信心，所谓“信为能入＊”。</p>
<p>With very accurate formulation in Chinese, he described the Way, with respect to a critical problem about faith, what is called &#8220;Faith is what allows you to enter.&#8221;</p>
<p>    恒实法师此次来到中国，是为参加纪念虚云老和尚的活动。以此因缘，法师唱了一首歌：“杯子扑落地，响声鸣呖呖，虚空粉碎也，狂心当下歇。烫着手打碎杯，家破人亡语难开，春到花香处处秀，山河大地是如来”，传达虚云老和尚开悟境界。</p>
<p>This journey of Rev. Heng Sure to China was for the purpose of participating in the movement of commemorating Xu Yun Dragon-Elephant (my honorific -xp).  From that connection, the Dharma Master sang a song:  &#8220;The glass falling to the ground, the sound resounds like the warbling of orioles, the Void is smashed and scattered like dust, the wild heart should rest.  Scalding my hand, I smashed the glass to bits, the lost speech of a homeless person is hard to start (again),  with the coming of spring the fragrance of flowers penetrates everwhere, the mountains and rivers of the great earth are the Tathagata.&#8221;  ((This is SO beautiful.  What had happened to the venerable Dragon-Elephant, who literally lived for 120 years, and who literally was homeless for the majority of that long reign, was that his ENTIRE human individuality had gotten mapped onto that damnable cup.  I guarantee you, you can do that wierd stuff when you&#8217;re homeless.  So when it was shattered, which was NOT, I guarantee you even more, an accident (Xu Yun had long since earned Highest Final Enlightenment), he literally lost the entirety of what he was used to considering to be his mind.  Here he is singing, as only an Enlightened individual can, about the fact that all the appearances are still there, but the POV by which you were used to looking at them has been irreversibly destroyed. &#8211;xp, 26 Nov 09).</p>

<p>After the affair, Xecheng Fashi described the affair in an article on his <a href="http://blog.sina.com.cn/s/blog_489e98b90100fv6f.html">Xinlang blog, &#8220;The Guitar-Playing, Sutra-Lecturing Foreign Monk,&#8221;</a> in which he described in detail the extraordinary exchange this time between American and Chinese monks.<br />

<p>修行佛法，包括成就任何事业都要依靠以下三个过程，也就是信、愿、行</p>
<p>In practicing Buddhadharma, including the accomplishment of any activity, you always have to rely on the following three stages, i.e., Faith, Vow, and Action (or Execution).</p>
<p>信：相信佛所说的。不管学什么，首先要相信别人告诉你的经验。例如，学各种科学知识，首先就要相信其中的各项前提条件等等。并相信其中得到的结论，这样才能深入。当然，学习过程中可以有一定的疑惑，但一定是要首先相信，深入学习后运用所学再进行比较。佛法也是如此，首先要相信，这样才能学下去，所以说佛度有缘人。但学佛的过程中是允许有疑惑的，佛经里说只有大菩萨才能真正对佛法生起实信，因为他们经过了亲身验证。而对于我们，就像对相对论一样，因为没有那种智慧去理解，就只能首先相信它是正确的，才能对现代物理学进行学习。</p>
<p>Faith:  Believe what was said by the Buddha.  No matter what you study, you first have to believe the experiences that other people tell you.  For example, in studying any kind of scientific knowledge, you first have to believe all the premises pertaining to it, and so forth.  Furthermore you also have to believe all the conclusions that have been arrived at in it, and only in this way can you deeply enter into it.  Of course in the process of study, you can certainly have doubts, but certainly you must first believe.  After you&#8217;ve deeply entered into study and put what you&#8217;ve learned into use, then you can go forward with comparisons.  Buddhadharma is also like this.  First you have to believe, only in this waya can you go forward with your studies, and so it is said that the Buddha saves those that he has conditions (or predestined affinity &#8211; 缘) with.  But the process of studying Buddhism can be full of uncertainties.  The Buddhist scriptures say that only great Bodhisattvas can bring forth certainty with respect ot the Bodhadharma, because they have passed through personal verification.  But in our cases, it&#8217;s just like it is with the theory of relativity, because there is not the kind of wisdom that brings forth understanding, so we simply have to first believe that it is accurate, and only then can we carry study forward with respect to modern-era physics.</p>
<p>愿：相信并不等于愿望。当相信了所学的，还要有愿望去达到。没有善法欲，就算相信，也没有意义。就像别人告诉你去北京的方法，你也相信，但你不想去，实际上并没有效果。</p>
<p>Vow:  Faith certianly isn&#8217;t equal to desire.  Having believed what has been studied, we still must have the desire to bring it about.  If you just plan on believing without having wholesome Dharma desires, it is meaningless.  It&#8217;s just as if other people tell you how to go to Beijing, and you believe what they say, but don&#8217;t plan to go; there&#8217;s no purpose.</p>
<p>行：相信相应的方法，并有达到目标的愿望，还需要去做，也就是行。没有行作为依托的愿只是空愿，就像不想给树浇水还想吃果实一样。所以还要按照相应的方法去行</p>
<p>Action:  Believing in the relevant methods, and having the desire to arrive at the goal, you still need to go do it, and that is action.  If action is not what is being relied on (to produce results in Buddhist practice), then desire is just empty desire.  It&#8217;s just like not thinking about watering the tree but still wanting to eat the fruit.  So you still have to go do it according to the relevant methods.  ((This is deep.  Desire is where it hangs for Westerners.  Desire, in and of itself, will simply drain your life-force, which is limited, which is why the Buddha forbade it.  It&#8217;s going to happen to you anyway whether you want it or not, and whether you focus on it or not.  The Buddha has taught us to focus on renunciation, and you do that by action, which is what attains the Goal, partly by exhausting the desire that drives it &#8211;xp, 26 Nov 09))</p>
<p>信在这三者里起着最基础的作用，如果不相信佛所说的，那么一切佛学都会无从下手，因此信是基础</p>
<p>Among these three, faith is what brings about the most basic function.  If you don&#8217;t believe what the Buddha said, then there may be no place to start (practice) from in the entirety of Buddhist studies, and because of this, faith is most fundamental.</p>

昨天我访问了一位相识, 浮现了她有新宠物猫儿。总的来说，那只截尾的猫儿不像很友好的，可是他一看到我，大声讲了很多貌性然的话。相识以为，“不平常的，他普通的不会跟不认识的人讲话。”  我告诉她了：“是因为我是佛家，戒肉。要是你吃肉，引发动物的害怕，这是佛法的学说。”  她大眼睛的凝视我。“真的了！”  我回答了。她瞬瞬的看我、望貌。 那只貌儿还是在强烈地望我。 想到了两位动物都很可笑。

<p>昨天我访问了一位相识, 浮现了她有新宠物猫儿。总的来说，那只截尾的猫儿不像很友好的，可是他一看到我，大声讲了很多貌性然的话。相识以为，“不平常的，他普通的不会跟不认识的人讲话。”  我告诉她了：“是因为我是佛家，戒肉。要是你吃肉，引发动物的害怕，这是佛法的学说。”  她大眼睛的凝视我。“真的了！”  我回答了。她瞬瞬的看我、望貌。 那只貌儿还是在强烈地望我。 想到了两位动物都很可笑。</p>

My acquaintance opined,  &#8220;This is unusual, he usually won&#8217;t talk to strangers.&#8221;  I told her, &#8220;That&#8217;s because I&#8217;m a Buddhist, and I don&#8217;t eat meat.  If you eat meat, it induces terror in animals.  That&#8217;s Buddhist doctrine.&#8221;  She stared at me with big eyes.  &#8220;It&#8217;s true!&#8221; I told her.  She was looking back and forth from me to the cat from one moment to the next.  That cat was still staring at me intensely.  I arrived at the idea that both animals were pretty funny.</p>
<p>Do you want to know what that cat was talking about or not?  That&#8217;s OK, it doesn&#8217;t make any difference at all.  I think that if you come to my site, you can listen to some of what I have to say.  What that cat opined was:  &#8220;Hey!  Big stupid animal!  Who asked you to invade their turf?  That your crimes in your former lives were so heavy that in this life you only have two legs is not my fault!  Don&#8217;t attribute your own shortcomings to me.&#8221;  Don&#8217;t even mention that I hadn&#8217;t said a word.  I&#8217;m telling you, that cat that my acquaintance had gotten ahold of was proving to be a very opinionated personality.  </p>
<p>However, I think that in this polluted world, everything is just like this.  When beings have been oppressed to the point that they don&#8217;t dare to speak, and then later arrive at circumstances where they don&#8217;t feel oppressed, the first thing they do is to find scapegoats.  A scapegoat who doesn&#8217;t have a single speck of resentment is also called a Bodhisattva.  </p>

<p>I&#8217;m thankful that Shakyamuni Buddha descended from Tushita Heaven to speak correct Dharma to us.  I&#8217;m thankful for Medicine Master Crystal Radiance Tathagata&#8217;s twelve vows.  I&#8217;m thankful that I live in Hawii, America&#8217;s most Buddhist state.  I&#8217;m thankful that I live on Oahu, the island in the Hawaiian archipelago that has the most Buddhist sects.  I&#8217;m thankful that I live on the North Shore, Oahu&#8217;s most beautiful area.  I&#8217;m thankful for all the Buddhist lineages that I&#8217;ve participated in, but must especially Fo Guang Shan Center, Guan Yin Temple in Chinatown, and the (Japanese) Haleiwa Jodo Mission.  </p>
<p>But on this particular Thanksgiving Day, the development I&#8217;m really, really most thankful for is that my root lineage, Fo Guang Shan, has acquired an Abbot who understands the orthodox transmission of the Buddhadharma, and who represents the new Mahayana Revolution that has been fomented in our times on the Chinese mainland, namely, the new Abbot in charge at Zhongmei Temple in Houston, Longxiang Fashi.</p>

Then all the Buddhas will protect him and keep him in mind. His prayers will be granted, he will eventually attain perfect Enlightenment.&#8221;<br />

From my current translation project:  Longxiang on the Three Treatises School：

The late Vice-Chairman of the Chinese People&#8217;s Political Consultative Committee and Chairman of the Chinese Buddhist Association, Layman Zhao Puchu served as the President.  The late Vice-Chairman of the Chinese Buddhist Academy, the senior monk Ming Shanzhang served as the Vice-President.  At present the Vice-Chairman of the Chinese Buddhist Association and President of the Jiangsu Province Buddhist Association, the elder (monk) Mingxue is serving as the President.  The Buddhist Academy has  Dharma Masters who are prominent in their fields and dedicated to Buddhist endeavors, and it also has cultural teachers who have been hired in a cautious selection process, elegant grounds and environment, an excellent academic curriculum, and it has trained wave after wave of outstanding monastics.  It has passed through over twenty springs and autumns to today, and the more than 500 student monks that have graduated have fanned out to every area in the country, and most of them have become the backbone of Buddhist institutions.  Their promoting of the Buddhadharma, benefiting beings, and building an harmonious society unleashes very important chemistry.  Step by step, the Qixia Branch of the Chinese Buddhist Academy has become famous near and far as a &#8220;Dharma Master cradle.&#8221; &#8230;</p></blockquote>

In India it was called the “Madhyamaka ” School, and it became prominent by its emphasis on the propagation and transmission of the Madhyamaka philosophy of Nagarjuna and Aryadeva. When it was transmitted to China it was named the Three Treatises Lineage after the “Treatise on the Middle Way,” the “One Hundred Verse Treatise,” and the “Treatise of the Twelve Gates,” those three commentaries.  &#8230;</p></blockquote>

<p>An Abbot whose brain-bag contains something is hard to encounter (a double entendre from the scripture-opening verse).  I think that Madhyamaka is my favorite Buddhist philosophy. For me, Nagarjuna is a huge cultural hero.</p>

He also became the Abbot of the Fo Guang Shan organization&#8217;s temple at Yixing (at Ven. 上个月我在VA的初级护理医师，在管理一次常规检查之中，发现我后背上边有了一包疑性的损害，说 “恐怕有基细胞癌。 我们叫专家检测。”  我早知道那儿有什么问题，可是我没办法看见。 连用镜子还看不见。 根据初级护理医师的转诊，昨天我访问了一位很快乐的皮肤学者。他一看病就强调：“有了！ 那就是基细胞癌。我立刻要把它切除！ &#8221;  坐在考查桌子上的我边望了站在大夫的左边的穿着浅绿色的临庄长袍、戴着消毒面罩、 手抓着笔记板的那位护士。很显明的，大夫要开刀的话，她都不会反对。她的消毒面罩之上的两不透明的眼球没意可念。 同时，那位非常多嘴的大夫继续下去了： “你得知道，你必定要患癌症病的话，基细胞癌总是你对好的挑选。&#8230;”  贬抑患过癌症病的、捕获在考查桌子上的我只会点头。 心里想 “我抗议这种大夫，也许被变成为类似那位生性怪癖的护士吧！”  同时，大夫逐渐地曾移动位子了，乃至他正站在我和护士之间。“我有不同的意见。根据我的临庄经验，这就是基细胞癌病。要是先叫实验室作活组织检查，后等待结果，更后再看你，总是费钱、费时。 现今的约会， 我不但要取活组织检查料，并且要切除肿瘤，好吧？”
其实上， 我不会反对这位大夫所表明的态度。 三十年之前，我已经有了一次基细胞癌性的肿瘤在脸上。目前的情况比那场的安全的多。 可是，癌症病就是癌症病。基细胞癌病总是不会忽视的，还不会拖延的。 你一遭到这个诊断，要立刻下手。在这种情况之下， 一位前摄的大夫真是你最好的朋友。所以，我当然同意了， 说 “有两位大夫已经以为有基细胞癌病。 我不会反对。&#8221;  大夫很意义深长的面对了护士，强调：“临庄显明的基细胞癌病。”  十分种以后，他已经完成了手术。你必得知道，在咱们快刀武士之间，这样小肿瘤非为大事。
我想我这个毛病， 像第一夫人劳拉·布什的2006年发生的，是从虫咬起生的。

<p>Last month, my primary care physician at the VA, in the midst of a routine examination, discovered a suspicious lesion on my upper back and said, &#8220;It looks like basal cell cancer.  We&#8217;ll have a specialist look at it.&#8221;  I long knew there was some problem going on there, but I couldn&#8217;t see it, even in the mirror.  On the basis of his referral, yesterday I saw a very felicitous dermatologist.  As soon as he looked at it he stated very definitely, &#8220;I&#8217;ve got it.  It&#8217;s basal cell cancer. I&#8217;m going to cut it off immediately.&#8221;  Sitting there on the examination table, I looked sideways at the nurse who was standing to the doctor&#8217;s left, wearing light green scrubs and a surgical mask, and carrying a clipboard.  Clearly, if the doctor wanted to operate, she would not object.  But her two opaque eyeballs above her mask were unreadable.  At the same time, that unusually loquacious doctor was continuing, &#8220;You should know, that If you must have cancer, basal cell cancer is your best choice&#8230;&#8221;   Being demeaned by having contracted cancer, and trapped on top of the examination table, all I could do was nod my head.  In my heart I was thinking, &#8220;If I oppose this kind of doctor, I&#8217;ll probably be changed into something like that zombie-esque nurse!&#8221;  Simultaneously, the doctor had gradually changed his position until he was directly between me and the nurse.  &#8220;I have a different idea.  On the basis of my clinical experience this is certainly basal cell cancer.  If we take a biopsy and then wait for laboratory results, and then see you again, this just wastes time and money.  I want to both get a sample for a biopsy, and also remove the tumor in this appointment, OK?&#8221;</p>
<p>In reality, I couldn&#8217;t oppose the attitude displayed by this doctor.  Thirty years previously, I had already had an incidence of a basal cell tumor on my face.  The current case was much safer than that one.  But cancer is still cancer.  Basal cell cancer can be neither ignored nor procrastinated about.  Once you recieve this diagnosis, you must act immediately.  Under these kinds of circumstances, a pro-active doctor is your best friend.  So naturally I agreed, saying, &#8220;Two doctors have already looked at this and said that it&#8217;s basal cell cancer.  I can&#8217;t object.&#8221;  The doctor then very pointedly turned to the nurse and emphatically said:  &#8220;Clinically obvious basal cell cancer.&#8221;  Ten minutes later, he had already finished operating.  You ought to know that among us fast-knived martial artists, this kind of small tumor is not a big thing.  </p>
<p>I think that this minor illness, like <a href="http://news.jfdaily.com/gb/jfxww/xwzt/life/node38751/node45928/node45937/userobject1ai2009049.html">First Lady Laura Bush&#8217;s incident of 2006</a>, started with an insect bite.</p>
