The American Buddhist

Rules of Engagement

This blog-site is a statement of my personal views about everything, but predominantly about all forms of Buddhism, which has been the focus of my different lives since Gautama Lord Buddha, the Sage of the Shakya clan, the Blissful Lord, of whom Amitabha Buddha, the Buddha of Limitless Light is the Samghogakaya (Bliss Body), descended from Tushita Heaven to walk the dusty roads of Jambudvipa (India) for the sake of every single one of us without exception. I view every single word of the Buddha as having been spoken directly to me personally.

The blog-site has a liberal TOS policy which has allowed me to do this, in the face of innumerable objections from numerous quarters. I am grateful for that. This kind of opposition always has been, and always will be, the necessary condition under which the Truth is spoken in this dreadful realm of five pollutions and stinging red dust, where everything beloved must necessarily die.

I have personal Rules of Engagement in this, which I would like to now state, in the hope of relieving some of the stress of my East Asian friends about me, because they do not necessarily understand how what I state here might map onto my “real world” behavior:

1. Dissent – I never have, and never will, express dissent in my speech or behavior in any Buddhist temple. When I disagree with what goes on in temples, I simply just ignore it or leave. Sometimes I write about the disagreement here. This is not a temple. I can do that because of my constitutional right to free speech as an American. It does not mean that I am about to foment a disturbance in the temple. It means that my birth culture does not require me to suppress dissent. The Buddhadharma in general, if you will actually read it, also does require the suppression of dissent. The automatic and obligatory suppression of dissent is an East Asian cultural habit and preference which violates fundamental American core values with respect to free speech and democratic social structure. I am entitled to my opinions, and I believe that the transmission of the Buddhadharma to the American mainstream requires the expression of my opinions about Buddhism in general, even when that may be traumatic to Asians. But I will never do this in the temple. I will do it here on my own personal turf.

2. Orthodoxy – For me, the Buddha is the highest and final authority in Buddhism. I do not accept words originating with other proposed Buddhist authorities whatsoever at all. This includes such things as the Nihilist heresies of Shinran Shonin, and Xing Yun Dashi’s use of apocryphal Neo-Confucianist Repentance texts in Fo Guang Shan Centers. In general, anything presented as the teaching of the Buddha from other sources in East Asian culture will most definitely meet my explicit criticism on this site. My experience has been that what conflicts with, or departs from, the words of the Buddha simply does not work in a Buddhist context, and that such “expediencies” are untransmittable to the American mainstream. I will not give face to them anywhere, and that includes this site.

3. East Asian culture – In, general I like East Asian culture and participate in it. But I will not honor it, feel good about it, or participate in in when it is presented, in and of itself, as the teaching of the Buddha. The Buddha’s teaching is culture-transcendant and world-transcendant. It transcends all of our birth cultures. Our birth cultures are our own, but the Buddhadhama is the Buddha’s alone, and it was spoken for all sentient beings, not any given culture, East or West.

4. Since the start of the month of Medicine Master Buddha recitation (19 Oct 09), everything posted to this site must be bilingual. After this, single-language documents are ruled out forever more.
