不帮助你的人不可认为师父 – A person who doesn’t help you cannot be called “Teacher.”

Buddhism has a very guru-and-teacher-oriented side to it, but I don’t think it was ever meant to. The Buddha found his own way to freedom from suffering. He followed various teachers beforehand, but after thoroughly understanding what they were talking about, he realised they had not reached final liberation. Finally, he sat beneath the bodhi tree and penetrated the depths of his own mind and consciousness. Then he found the way. And basically that is what he advised others to do….

佛教有一遍很关于师父/古鲁的方面,可是我绝对不想那必得佛陀所想要的意思。佛陀找到了他自己的离苦得解脱的道路。他跟随了各种的师父、彻底地明白过他们所说的意思是什么之后,佛陀才烧得,他们还没达到了无上解脱。究竟地,坐在菩提树之下,穿透了他自己的心意、觉悟, 才找到了正道。而基本性的,这也是他给其他人所劝告的行为。(本人英翻中者)。

这根本、不可逃避的意义是一阵永恒达到的谜语,可不是吗? 有很多兴趣佛教者,尤其是东方人,以为: 哦! 我这样敝性的、身份幸苦的、谁也看下的、谁也不在乎的东西吗? 我如此想不得! 我一认为师父没达到阿牛多咯三秒三普题的话,立刻就完蛋了!

嘿!上瘾孝道的、十分没有勇气的瞎子了! 要是你师父是让你挂上那么古代的、原始的态度的一位人物,他不应当认为师父。他绝对比你还笨。最好你们两位人一起想办法找到真正的师父吧。

This basic, unavoidable issue is an eternally encountered riddle, is it not? There are a lot of people interested in Buddhism, particularly Easterners, who think , “Oh! But what about miserable, fated-to-suffer, looked down on by everybody and cared for by nobody yours truly? I don’t think so! As soon as I think that Teacher has not attained Highest Final Enlightenment, I’ll be finished!”

Hey! Piety-addicted, utterly gutless fool! If your teacher allows you to affect that kind of ancient and primitive attitude, he cannot be called “Teacher.” He is absolutely even stupider than you are. The best thing would be for both of you together to figure out how to find a real Teacher.

谈到宣化上人 -Speaking of Master Xuan Hua


如下,请发现虚云龙象(1839-1959)给宣化上人(1918-1995)的宗派法脉传送文。

Below please find the Writ of Transmission that was given to Master Xuan Hua(1918-1995 by Dragon-Elephant Xu Yun(1839-1959).

活得到120岁的虚云龙象把宗派法脉送给了宣化上人。可是,不运气仅仅活到77岁的宣化上人没相似传输给谁,或是西方的或是东方的。 这就是佛教传输于美国主流的历史上的最惨重的失败,还是现代汉传佛教的最可耻的放棄责任。

Dragon-Elephant Xu Yun , who lived to the age of 120, transmitted his lineage to Master Xuan Hua. But the unfortunate Master Xuan Hua, who only lived to 77, did not similarly transmit to anyone, whether Easterner or Westerner. This was the most crushing defeat in the history of the transmission of Buddhism to the American mainstream, and it was also the most shameful abdication of responsibility in Chinese Mahayana Buddhism in the modern era.

本月八日上午,高鼻深目的恒实法师(Rev. Heng Sure)踏进北京郊外的龙泉寺。这位美国法界佛教总会会长、万佛城总住持来此,要以中文演讲为中国僧人、学员开示。

On 8 Nov 09, the high-nosed and deep-eyed Rev. Heng Sure set foot in Longquan Temple in the suburbs of Beijing. This Chairman of America’s Dharma Realm Buddhist Association, and the overall Abbot of the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas, came here to address the Chinese monks and students with a talk in Chinese.

事情的缘起,是恒实法师此前在北京大学国际关系学院一场题为《佛教在西方的新面貌》的讲座,引起此间佛教界的兴趣与讨论。

The way this got started was that previously Heng Sure taught a course called “The New Face of Buddhism in the West” and it brought about the current interest and discussion in Buddhist circles.

龙泉寺方丈、同时也是中国佛教协会副会长兼秘书长学诚法师得知后,特地邀恒实法师来到龙泉寺演讲。

When the Abbot of Longquan Temple, who is also at the same time the Vice Chairman and Executuve Secretary of the Chinese Buddhist Association, Xuecheng Fashi, found out about it, he invited Rev. Heng Sure to speak at Longquan Temple.

当天,正值观世音菩萨法会期间,恒实入乡随俗,讲观世音菩萨在各国的不同名号,很多感应事迹,从一个个故事中讲述观世音菩萨不同面的慈悲。

That day, which was right in the middle of the Guanyin Bodhisattva Dharma Assembly, Heng Sure did like the Romans in Rome, and talked about all the different names of Guanyin in different countries, with a lot of stories about (the Bodhisattva’s) response, and in each story, he described the different faces of Guanyin’s compassion.

他以准确的中文表述道,修行人一个关键的问题在于信心,所谓“信为能入*”。

With very accurate formulation in Chinese, he described the Way, with respect to a critical problem about faith, what is called “Faith is what allows you to enter.”

恒实法师此次来到中国,是为参加纪念虚云老和尚的活动。以此因缘,法师唱了一首歌:“杯子扑落地,响声鸣呖呖,虚空粉碎也,狂心当下歇。烫着手打碎杯,家破人亡语难开,春到花香处处秀,山河大地是如来”,传达虚云老和尚开悟境界。

This journey of Rev. Heng Sure to China was for the purpose of participating in the movement of commemorating Xu Yun Dragon-Elephant (my honorific -xp). From that connection, the Dharma Master sang a song: “The glass falling to the ground, the sound resounds like the warbling of orioles, the Void is smashed and scattered like dust, the wild heart should rest. Scalding my hand, I smashed the glass to bits, the lost speech of a homeless person is hard to start (again), with the coming of spring the fragrance of flowers penetrates everwhere, the mountains and rivers of the great earth are the Tathagata.” ((This is SO beautiful. What had happened to the venerable Dragon-Elephant, who literally lived for 120 years, and who literally was homeless for the majority of that long reign, was that his ENTIRE human individuality had gotten mapped onto that damnable cup. I guarantee you, you can do that wierd stuff when you’re homeless. So when it was shattered, which was NOT, I guarantee you even more, an accident (Xu Yun had long since earned Highest Final Enlightenment), he literally lost the entirety of what he was used to considering to be his mind. Here he is singing, as only an Enlightened individual can, about the fact that all the appearances are still there, but the POV by which you were used to looking at them has been irreversibly destroyed. –xp, 26 Nov 09).

After the affair, Xecheng Fashi described the affair in an article on his Xinlang blog, “The Guitar-Playing, Sutra-Lecturing Foreign Monk,” in which he described in detail the extraordinary exchange this time between American and Chinese monks.

In practicing Buddhadharma, including the accomplishment of any activity, you always have to rely on the following three stages, i.e., Faith, Vow, and Action (or Execution).

信:相信佛所说的。不管学什么,首先要相信别人告诉你的经验。例如,学各种科学知识,首先就要相信其中的各项前提条件等等。并相信其中得到的结论,这样才能深入。当然,学习过程中可以有一定的疑惑,但一定是要首先相信,深入学习后运用所学再进行比较。佛法也是如此,首先要相信,这样才能学下去,所以说佛度有缘人。但学佛的过程中是允许有疑惑的,佛经里说只有大菩萨才能真正对佛法生起实信,因为他们经过了亲身验证。而对于我们,就像对相对论一样,因为没有那种智慧去理解,就只能首先相信它是正确的,才能对现代物理学进行学习。

Faith: Believe what was said by the Buddha. No matter what you study, you first have to believe the experiences that other people tell you. For example, in studying any kind of scientific knowledge, you first have to believe all the premises pertaining to it, and so forth. Furthermore you also have to believe all the conclusions that have been arrived at in it, and only in this way can you deeply enter into it. Of course in the process of study, you can certainly have doubts, but certainly you must first believe. After you’ve deeply entered into study and put what you’ve learned into use, then you can go forward with comparisons. Buddhadharma is also like this. First you have to believe, only in this waya can you go forward with your studies, and so it is said that the Buddha saves those that he has conditions (or predestined affinity – 缘) with. But the process of studying Buddhism can be full of uncertainties. The Buddhist scriptures say that only great Bodhisattvas can bring forth certainty with respect ot the Bodhadharma, because they have passed through personal verification. But in our cases, it’s just like it is with the theory of relativity, because there is not the kind of wisdom that brings forth understanding, so we simply have to first believe that it is accurate, and only then can we carry study forward with respect to modern-era physics.

愿:相信并不等于愿望。当相信了所学的,还要有愿望去达到。没有善法欲,就算相信,也没有意义。就像别人告诉你去北京的方法,你也相信,但你不想去,实际上并没有效果。

Vow: Faith certianly isn’t equal to desire. Having believed what has been studied, we still must have the desire to bring it about. If you just plan on believing without having wholesome Dharma desires, it is meaningless. It’s just as if other people tell you how to go to Beijing, and you believe what they say, but don’t plan to go; there’s no purpose.

行:相信相应的方法,并有达到目标的愿望,还需要去做,也就是行。没有行作为依托的愿只是空愿,就像不想给树浇水还想吃果实一样。所以还要按照相应的方法去行

Action: Believing in the relevant methods, and having the desire to arrive at the goal, you still need to go do it, and that is action. If action is not what is being relied on (to produce results in Buddhist practice), then desire is just empty desire. It’s just like not thinking about watering the tree but still wanting to eat the fruit. So you still have to go do it according to the relevant methods. ((This is deep. Desire is where it hangs for Westerners. Desire, in and of itself, will simply drain your life-force, which is limited, which is why the Buddha forbade it. It’s going to happen to you anyway whether you want it or not, and whether you focus on it or not. The Buddha has taught us to focus on renunciation, and you do that by action, which is what attains the Goal, partly by exhausting the desire that drives it –xp, 26 Nov 09))

Among these three, faith is what brings about the most basic function. If you don’t believe what the Buddha said, then there may be no place to start (practice) from in the entirety of Buddhist studies, and because of this, faith is most fundamental.

戒肉,懂猫儿 Be Vegetarian and Understand Cats

昨天我访问了一位相识, 浮现了她有新宠物猫儿。总的来说,那只截尾的猫儿不像很友好的,可是他一看到我,大声讲了很多貌性然的话。相识以为,“不平常的,他普通的不会跟不认识的人讲话。” 我告诉她了:“是因为我是佛家,戒肉。要是你吃肉,引发动物的害怕,这是佛法的学说。” 她大眼睛的凝视我。“真的了!” 我回答了。她瞬瞬的看我、望貌。 那只貌儿还是在强烈地望我。 想到了两位动物都很可笑。

你愿不愿意知道那只猫所讲的是什么? 好,没有什么关系了。你到了我的站,以为你要听点儿我讲的话。那只貌儿以为的是: “嘿!不客气的大笨动物了!谁要你侵害别人的草皮? 你前世犯的罪那么重,在现世仅仅的有两条腿,绝对地不是从我缺点而来的!不要把自己的恶点方在我的身上!” 连不提到我没说一声音。告诉你了,我的相识所得到的小宠物猫儿到底存在了一只很有意见的人物。

不过,我以为在这种被污染的世界上,任何的回事要这样。被压迫的有情,压迫的不敢说话,然后遇到了究竟不感觉压迫的情况,一直要发现替罪羊。 半点怨恨也没有的替罪羊异名为菩萨。

Yesterday I visited an acquaintance, and it emerged that she had a new pet cat. Overall, that bob-tailed cat didn’t seem very friendly, but as soon as he caught sight of me, he very insistently spoke a lot of cat-talk. My acquaintance opined, “This is unusual, he usually won’t talk to strangers.” I told her, “That’s because I’m a Buddhist, and I don’t eat meat. If you eat meat, it induces terror in animals. That’s Buddhist doctrine.” She stared at me with big eyes. “It’s true!” I told her. She was looking back and forth from me to the cat from one moment to the next. That cat was still staring at me intensely. I arrived at the idea that both animals were pretty funny.

Do you want to know what that cat was talking about or not? That’s OK, it doesn’t make any difference at all. I think that if you come to my site, you can listen to some of what I have to say. What that cat opined was: “Hey! Big stupid animal! Who asked you to invade their turf? That your crimes in your former lives were so heavy that in this life you only have two legs is not my fault! Don’t attribute your own shortcomings to me.” Don’t even mention that I hadn’t said a word. I’m telling you, that cat that my acquaintance had gotten ahold of was proving to be a very opinionated personality.

However, I think that in this polluted world, everything is just like this. When beings have been oppressed to the point that they don’t dare to speak, and then later arrive at circumstances where they don’t feel oppressed, the first thing they do is to find scapegoats. A scapegoat who doesn’t have a single speck of resentment is also called a Bodhisattva.

感恩节快乐! - Happy Thanksgiving!


感恩施加摩尼佛从兜率天曾降世为我们说正法。 感恩药师玻璃光如来的十二大愿。感恩我住在夏威夷,美国最有佛教的州。感恩我住在瓦胡岛,夏威夷群岛之最有佛教宗派的岛。感恩我住瓦胡岛北海岸,该岛之最美丽的地区。感恩我所有参加的佛教宗派,尤其是佛光山中心、唐人街的观音庙、还有(日本)哈雷一瓦净土宗传道部。

可是,在今天特别的感恩节,我最感恩的发展真真正正的是本宗派的佛光山取得了一位很理解正传佛法、还是代表现代中国大陆所引发的新佛教大乘革命的方丈, 就是说新担任休斯敦中美寺者,隆相法师。

I’m thankful that Shakyamuni Buddha descended from Tushita Heaven to speak correct Dharma to us. I’m thankful for Medicine Master Crystal Radiance Tathagata’s twelve vows. I’m thankful that I live in Hawii, America’s most Buddhist state. I’m thankful that I live on Oahu, the island in the Hawaiian archipelago that has the most Buddhist sects. I’m thankful that I live on the North Shore, Oahu’s most beautiful area. I’m thankful for all the Buddhist lineages that I’ve participated in, but must especially Fo Guang Shan Center, Guan Yin Temple in Chinatown, and the (Japanese) Haleiwa Jodo Mission.

But on this particular Thanksgiving Day, the development I’m really, really most thankful for is that my root lineage, Fo Guang Shan, has acquired an Abbot who understands the orthodox transmission of the Buddhadharma, and who represents the new Mahayana Revolution that has been fomented in our times on the Chinese mainland, namely, the new Abbot in charge at Zhongmei Temple in Houston, Longxiang Fashi.

佛光山究竟弄到了一位方丈 - Fo Guang Shan Finally Comes up with an Abbot

佛光山还没向英文传播媒介发表的新闻稿说:

中美寺新任住持隆相和尚,1982年7月于武汉市归元寺出家,现为南京栖霞古寺住持,也担任佛光山系之宜兴大觉寺住持,其佛学素养深厚,广受佛教界推崇,隆相法师于10多年前往台湾佛光山,礼星云大师座下成为法子,典礼上 (休斯敦佛光山中美寺, 2009年11月15号),大师赞扬隆相法师为“正派的和尚”。 

Fo Guang Shan’s press release, which has still not been released to the English-language media,says:

Longxiang Fashi, who is taking charge of Fo Guang Shan’s Zhongmei (Central America) Temple in Houston, left home as a monk in July of 1982 at Yinyuan Temple in the ‎of Wuhan, and emerged as the Abbot of ancient Qixia Temple in Nanjing. He also became the Abbot of the Fo Guang Shan organization’s temple at Yixing (at Ven. Xing Yun’s birthplace in Jiangsu Province – groomy, groomy, groomy, don’t you know?), his Buddhist study and accomplishments are awesome, and he has been virtually canonized by the Buddhist world. More than ten years ago, he went to Fo Guang Shan in Taiwan and became a Dharma son of Ven. Xing Yun. And in the ceremony (at Houston’s Zhongmei Temple on 15 Nov. 09) Venerable proclaimed him “An Upright Monk.”

念佛之更新 Buddha Recitation Update


戒网继续下去了

在我以前标明的七天时期内,就是说10月19号到今天的26号,在发去我最大的能力, 我只念过二十五万声佛名号,成我目标之四分之一。 要达到我百万佛号声的目标的话,明显应该加上三个礼拜之不上网。然而,我还戒网到11月16号。

请求大家维持一阵佛陀性的忍耐心。 我再上网的时候,在药师佛光明之下,我一定要写一阵全面双语、精神改革的博客。

Web Restriction is Continued

In the seven-day period that I previously designated, that is from 19 Oct. until today the 26th, putting out my greatest effort, I was only able to chant the Buddha’s name 250,000 times, accomplishing one-fourth of my goal. In order to accomplish my goal of one million repetitions, obviously it is necessary to add three weeks of not going online. Therefore, I will continue to restrict my Web use until 16 Oct.

I request everyone to maintain a stream (or battle array) of Buddha-like patience. When I go back online, in the light of Medicine Buddha, I will certainly write a (stream or battle array) of an all-around bilingual and reformed-spirited blog.

Zen Frog Got Grabby and Bought It!


Somebody put a “Zen Frog is gone” search term on my dashboard. Only a WordPress blog owner or previous owner would know to do that. It’s a way of twitting someone who refuses to degenerate to (gag, barf) Twitter. OK, I’m twitted! What’s your point?

I haven’t visited Zen Frog for a year, and I didn’t know that it had been bought out by idiots. It used to be the only other blog in the blogosphere which mentioned the unutterable Dragon-Elephant Xu Yun besides me, but then it degenerated to the below. This is a picture of a cache of one of its last front pages that I phished out of Yahoo. Google no longer has caches (jerks!).

Social networking? Hello? I came here to GET AWAY from a social networking site, aka (seizure, panic attack) Myspace. Socially Engaged Buddhism is the OPPOSITE of social networking. It means you never encourage idiocy, and you NEVER utter social noise. You ONLY give people what they need, and mostly what they need is to be told the truth of their existence, for once in their lives.

I’m so bummed out by this that I’m seriously thinking of going offline completely for a week to do bitter practices. That’s the only thing that can make me feel better.

… I take it as some cosmic law of exchange that if Disneyland pops up in Hong Kong and Tokyo, Buddhist temples can sprout up in Los Angeles, home of the magic kingdom. Indeed, it comes as no surprise to many Californians that scholars have agreed that the most complex Buddhist city in the world is nowhere in Asia but Los Angeles itself, where there are more than 300 Buddhist temples and centers, representing nearly all of Buddhist practices around the world.

Over the past 25 years, Buddhism has become the third most popular religion in America behind Christianity and Judaism, according to a 2008 report from the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life. Evidence of Buddhism spreading deep roots in America is abundant.

Last week CNN reported that, “programs and workshops educating inmates about meditation and yoga are sprouting up across the country.” There are more than 75 organizations working with some 2,500 people, most of them prisoners, and they inspired a documentary called “The Dhamma Brothers.”

This December, Thomas Dyer, a former Marine and one-time Southern Baptist pastor, will head to Afghanistan as the first Buddhist chaplain in the history of the U.S. Army. …

Um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um, um! Shucks, folks, we just be purely kicking samsaric butt all over the map. It’s got to the point that we even have mainstream journalists working for us anymore.
