(XII.)佛光山该何不足之 - How Fo Guang Shan Falls Short Of This


The people who fled to Taiwan at the time of the Revolution on the Chinese mainland were, in general, priveleged classes. They were those who had enough money and/or smarts to evade what they had accurately deduced would be a set of really miserable political, economic, and cultural conditions under Communist rule. That’s why there was subsequently an ‘economic miracle’ on Taiwan. These people were very good at money. And what they found on Taiwan was a robust and thoroughly creative island people who, if given half a chance to be prosperous, which they weren’t given under Japanese rule as “Formosa,” would certainly do that. Hence down the line we find the industious, creative, sensitive, financially hip, fun-loving, peace-loving, politically conflicted, literate, and culturally sophisticated people that we love as the Taiwanese. Oh, and hey, did I mention “sensitive” yet?

You might wonder, if you did not know them, why I did not write “Buddhist” in this list of defining characteristics, since my primary way of knowing them is through a Buddhist temple which is systematically trying to foment a ‘Buddhist miracle’ on the scale of Taiwan’s previous ‘economic miracle.’ It’s because, dear reader, the majority of this Island isn’t Buddhist.

Please check these stats. Although NOT the majority, there has been a concerted effort on the part of Taiwan Buddhists to portray Taiwan as a Buddhist island. Wrong! Taiwan is less than half Buddhist. Looking superficially at these figures, Buddhists barely outnumber the Taoists, and there is an important Christian minority on Taiwan. Chiang Kai-Shek was a Christian. But in actual fact, if you look closely, many of the non-Christian and non-Taoist groups listed here are, in fact, Taoist. If those are included, the total Taoist population of Taiwan outnumbers the Buddhists. Say again: Buddhism has neither an absolute nor a relative majority in the number of its members on Taiwan. The books have been cooked, and there has also been a Buddhist propaganda campaign, which is in full cry online, to obscure these facts.

But even more important than that, consider this: does running away from trouble, as the founders of the current regime on Taiwan did, give you some inside track on the Buddhadharma? I don’t see any “Right Capital Maintenance,” or any “Right Flight” in the Buddha’s Eightfold Path. It would seem to me, and the evidence is overwhelming in this material, that those in the Chinese cultural sphere of influence who are actually capable of a ‘Buddhist miracle’ are precisely those who stayed on the mainland and suffered through the whole dreadful evolution that was necessary to put an end to failed Confucianist drivel once and for all. This is particularly true of the Pure Land School, which simply grows stronger the more it’s persecuted. What we’re seeing on the mainland now is literally the reenaction of the Mahayana Revolution on a non-sectarian and social activist doctrinal basis, in the largest unified Buddhasangha on earth. The largest number of traditional Buddhist temples, many of them either stunning in their beauty or critical in the evolution of the Mahayana, or both, also exists in China.

Therefore, it would behoove Fo Guang Shan, at every level, from the founder on down, to be realistic about its limitations, and to be straighforward and thorough in seeking to overcome them. These limitations only seem to be cultural. They are not cultural. They are doctrinal. It has been thoroughly proven, by two solid millenia of experience, that there is no cultural conflict between Chinse culture and the Buddhadharma, and this certainly includes the culture of Taiwan today.

所以佛光山之各级,从开山者往下,理应实际地承认所有的不足之处,而直接地寻求把它们超越。这些不足之处仅仅似乎文化性的。 他们不是文化性的。它们是教义性的。二世纪结实的经验早曾证明,中国文化对于佛法没有什么文化矛盾,该一定包括台湾目前的文化在内。

Specifically, these are the doctrinal errors which limit Fo Guang Shan. Every single one of these, in and of itself, is ***lethal*** with respect to the transmission of the Buddhadharma to the American mainstream:

1. An ideology styled “Humanistic Buddhism.” This term is a mistranslation of 人间佛教. The standard English term for that concept is Socially Engaged Buddhism. The detailed description of “Humanistic Buddhism” in Chinese is a pile of neo-Confucianist funding boilerplate, which is not what was meant by it by Thich Nhat Hanh, who is the one who first translated it correctly, or of any of both Thich and Ven. Xing Yun’s predecessors who developed and espoused this concept, which existed in Asia for at least half a century before Ven. Xing Yun butchered its meaning.

Whatever the intention of this was, its overall effect has been divisive, by giving members of Fo Guang Shan the idea they they are a special and privilged group, and by creating the false impression that the original teaching of the Buddha, as given, was not already humanistic, or “among the people” to be accurate about what was meant. In general, the Taiwanese do not need any help feeling special and privileged. They do that quite well on their own. The Zen lineages that have already been transmitted to America are already “among the people,” “engaged,” “humanistic,” “humane,” “compassionate,” or however else you want to characterize them to make people feel that they matter. No ideology is an improvement on the core values of our Founding Fathers.

1. 一门称呼 “Humanistic Buddhism” 的意识形态。这个英文名词是 “人间佛教” 的一句译错。”人间佛教” 的标准英文翻译就是 Socially Engaged Buddhism. “Humanistic Buddhism” 的中文描述当成了一堆新儒门性的资金样板文件。这不是「一行禅师」(先把这名词的正翻者)或是星云大师和一行禅师俩的发展、赞成人间佛教的前辈们所打算的意义。星云大师将人间佛教的意思弄得一团糟之前,这个观念已经宽广地存在东亚半世纪了。

不论这门意识形态是从什么意图而打算起来的,以后所生的变成了区分的结果,以送给佛光山人员团特别的、有特权的自我概念,亦以创造佛陀原始所说的法非为人间的虚假印象。大体上,台湾人并不需要帮助为得到特别或是特权的自我概念。这个任务,真是他们独立地做得很好。每一门已经传输到美国的佛教禅宗还是 “人间的”、”忙碌的”、”人道主义的”、”仁慈的”、”慈悲的”、或是你无论如何要以表示而使人民相信它们有道理。比我门立国祖父的核心价值观更好的意识形态绝对不可存在。

2. An ordained Sangha dominated and led by nuns, and an administrative line structure composed entirely of nuns. This is just plain blatant deviance from what was spoken by the Buddha. This entire organizational structure is unstable, and I’ve never met one of these people who did not need a solid year of meditation before she would be able to actually see what she has been charged to do.

3. Pursuant to the above, the perversion of the temple liturgy by the inclusion of blatant apocrypha. This is a full-blown niusance, and my general experience with this kind of stuff has been that the only thing that can keep it going is money changing hands in the wrong direction behind the scenes.

By lineage, Ven. Xing Yun is a Rinzai Zen lineage holder. There is nothing in any of these doctrinal deviations that has any precedence in the Rinzai lineage. Furthermore, there is nothing in any of these deviations that is “progressive,” or that has any progressive outcomes. Like every deviation from orthodox Buddhadharma without exception, all they do, and all they will ever do, is to cause chaos and delusion, weaken practice and prevent transmission.

宗派上说,星云大师是一位臨済宗的宗祖。这些教义偏离的内容没有任何的先烈在臨済宗。并且、这些教义偏离的内容没有什么“进步” 的意义,还不能达到什么进步的结果。相似每一个毫无例外地偏离于正传统的佛法的现象,它们完全所为的、它们将来完全所为的,就是引起混乱和错觉、 削弱修行和 防止传输。

These deviations must cease!

  1. i totally agree with your comments about FGS and their deviations from the Buddha dharma which has a dangerous precedent. Deviations which has caused a lot of suffering amongst novice followers who wanted to seek the true dharma and were left greatly disillusioned.

    Novice followers who seek intellectual dharma like me and my family were left disillusioned after experiencing their doctrinal deviational teachings. I experienced it first hand at the Nan Tien Temple where they preached humility, compassion, karma and the sangha but in actual fact they were practicing their own doctrine which was mainly to have control and dominance over our lives, who we mingle with, our thought process and thinking, and subordination to their doctrines which were not reflective of the true dharma.

    Eventually I discovered their doctrinal deviational teachings and I rebelled by questioning them from an intellectual angle to which I received a lot of flak. That was when I decided to leave on the basis ” if the path that has been laid before me does not lead to a cultivation and progress or hinder my spiritual growth, that path has to be terminated”.

    I left FGS / Nan Tien Temple in Australia battered in thoughts, spiritual progress and questioning if I would ever find a source to learn the true dharma.

    I then left Australia for Singapore and then Europe where I am now content and happy to mingle with true dharma practitioners in Europe who practice the dharma intellectually.

    I discovered a lot of lies spoke by the Abbess and its management committee and confronted them with it and then questioned them if this is the practice of the true dharma. I left their employment disillusioned and afraid to go forward in search of the dharma. Then by fate and the guiding hand of the Great Lord Buddha, I left for Europe.

    Now I am happier and gradually finding closure and healing from the disappointment and disillusion of being involved with my FGS teachers. Time will not remove the scar but time will gradually lighten the scar and heal the hurt.

    I am happy with reading your article about FGS falling short. American Buddhist practitioners are a very intellectual lot similar to their European counterparts.

    FGS is so doctrinal, deviated and for this reason, in most FGS centres around the world, most of its devout followers are from Asian Chinese origins who are very submissive in nature. You do not see a lot of western or Europeans in their overseas centres except those who depend on them for employment out of the necessity to put food on the table.

    Westerners of European and American origins normally follow other religions especially Buddhism from an intellectual angle which makes FGS fall short in their explanation on their deviated doctrines.

    • Yikes, guy, I’m glad you’re in a better place!

      No, I don’t want to hear more. That was enough already.

      I feel your pain but I’m not sure that I can write anything that would help. But I would like to throw out some thoughts that you might chew on in your present Sangha, or while you’re otherwise practicing.

      1. Not every bona fide Buddhist can practice in every lineage. Our lineage choices are karmic. We choose where we can grow, not where we are necessarily comfortable or “happy.” I’m telling you, there are days when my hair is on fire in my temple (which is a comparatively huge problem for me, because I wear long hair), and it has nothing to do with the other people there. It’s me processing my karma.

      2. Although the Buddha’s teaching was originally given in intellectual terms, Buddhist practice is not intellectual. Not in this cycle of time. Practice is almost 100% emotional, and the emotions are both positive and negative, because that’s the nature of emotions. They always change polarity on you, and they do it at the damndest times. Where intellectual force comes in is to keep practicing, i.e., to keep our vows, whatever else is going on emotionally.

      3. In general, East Asian culture forbids the criticism of anyone in authority, no matter how deluded, evil, out to lunch, or unqualified they happen to be. This leads to imbalances, and to periodic social uproar, all perpetrated by perfectly sincere people, and Buddhists are no exception. Given the overwhelming force of this dynamic in the mass mind, I don’t see that one can do anything effective about it. That is, I don’t think we can damp these cycles. But I think we can hang out some warning flags, and that’s what I’ve done here with such pages as “How Fo Guang Shan Falls Short of This.” And what is the use of such flags? I think it helps people prepare flat rocks under which to crawl when the inevitable uproar comes. I’m installing a net-crawling machine under mine, and I hope the other flatrockees do the same, because otherwise, it could get boring down there.

      4. Please don’t ever curse yourself by saying that a hurt will never heal. That’s just not true, and it’s not the teaching of the Buddha. Everything we experience and everything we feel is the result of our previous actions and experience. Everything. If we endure present suffering without lashing out and causing suffering to others, this annihilates the karmas involved, whatever they were. If we start blaming our feellings on others, I guarantee you, this is just the slippery slide to hell, and it is greased by our unconscious thoughts and actions in the present. We can always practice right through all this negativity in the present, whatever our lineage happens to be, and whatever our Dharma gate happens to be, and then all that perfectly stupid and unnecessary negativity is converted to bliss. I’m using the present tense because that is how I feel in writing this to you.

    My profession is an Executive Head Chef of a major South East Asian Airline previously prior to my involvement with Fo Guang Shan after they lured me there with a contract issued by Nan Tien Temple in Australia which never received the approval of the FGS HQ in Taiwan when Nan Tien Temple signed it with me.

    I signed the contract not knowing that the Abbess had not received the approval of the Taiwan FGS HQ.

    SUbsequently they piled a ll sort of accusations that I used eggs in the vegetarian meals which is not deem suitable in vegetarian. But when the Abbess of Nan Tien Temple wants a sandwich with scrambled eggs made for her, it was fine. This is so hypocritical. They handled cash takings from sales without receipts so as to escape paying taxes on sales.

    This is not in principle with Buddha’s teachings of accountability.

    I am now in the process of writing a box which will be published and be on sales globally titled ” A Chef’s Journey to learn the Buddha Dharma – Route through the FGS Kitchen of Deviated Teachings”.

    This is similar to your efforts of putting up warning flags for novice buddhist practitioners seeking to learn the true Buddha’s dharma.

    I gave up a lucrative airline job as the Executive Head Chef of an airline to be the Executive Head Chef of FGS / Nan Tien Temple in Australia with the single objective of being able to learn the Dharma whilst I work at the FGS / Nan Tien Temple. Also it was the opportunity to be able to spend more time with my young family.

    This was not to be the place to learn the true Buddha’s Dharma.

    When they wanted me to join them to managed their troubled kitchen management, they said that the Buddha and Chenrezig send me there. But when they found that I began to intellectually questioned them about the teachings during classes, they asked that I moved out of the living quarters in two days throwing my wife and two young children out into the Australian winter cold regardless of whether we have found a place to live or not.

    The truth in asking me to leave is not that my food was not good. I found out from secret internal sympathetic sources that the real reason in asking me to leave was that the Abbess of Nan Tien Temple Australia signed a contract with me which was not approved by the Taiwan HQ and that the Tawian HQ had found out about me.

    If my food was not good, how come during my short tenure there, cash takings improved over 200 percent from food sales. Prior to me taking up the Executive Head Chef’s position, most of the monastics were sickly looking and were boiling chinese herbal medicine for certain ailments.

    When I started my work, I analyzed their ailment conditions through my knowledge of food science and designed food which would help them overcome the ailments. Two months into my work, the boiling of chinese herbal medicine all of a sudden ceased in the kitchen which signifies that they had proper nutrition from the food my team and me had served.

    The other reason they gave in asking me and family to leave immediately at the height of the Australian winter was that my time to come to the temple to work and to learn the Buddha’s Dharma is not ripe yet. The Abbess mentioned that I should come back to them when my karma timing is right to learn the Buddha’s dharma from them. What a crap!

    Buddha never turn away anyone who seek and wanted to learn the Dharma. Neither did Buddha say come back when your time is right to learn the Dharma. You just learn and practice it until you are a good practitioner.

    Never would I return even if they up my payroll to 20K per month.

    Money is not the issue here. All I seek is the truthful dharma and the practice of it

    My upcoming book will entail all my experiences in seeking to learn the truthful dharma and the experiences at FGS / Nan Tien Temple Australia to my current Dharma teachers in Europe where I am at peace with myself and my views of Western Buddhist Dharma practitioners.

    Your view on the racist agenda of FGS is evidently documented in my book where there was a branch and grouping of Australian natives who followed Buddhism through their association with FGS / Nan Tien Temple and this Australian grouping under the auspices of FGS / Nan Tien Temple grew so fast in numbers that they were seen as a threat to their Asian origins existence that FGS / Nan Tien Temple disbanded them saying that they have no funds to maintain them. In actual fact, the group was self supporting through the donations of its Australian native members.

    What a shameful act to speak of.

    I am of Asian origin but I am one of the few Asian who has a western educational background and thus will speak out against what I deem is not right in Buddha’s dharma propagation.

    Religion practice and its learning should be for all mankind and for all sentient beings on this earth and should not be polarized as what FGS is doing.

    I remembered one Native Australian who was helping in the reception area of Nan Tien Temple who is outspoken and was eventually asked to leave the temple. Many visitors to the temple had complaint to the reception and he asked them to write down their complaints and submit them to the Temple’s management which incurred the wrath of the Abbess. He had served the Temple for about 5 years as a volunteer faithfully.

    The FGs / Nan Tien temple is also a shelter for illegal immigrants some of whom are employed within the organization for a mearge salary and also housed within the monastery. What a shameful act in the name of compassion and kindness.

    If I were to be revengeful, which I remind myself that I should not, the Australian immigration would have raided the place. Some of these illegals are permanent fixtures in the Temple where they managed the shrine of Chenrezig and the shrine of Buddha within the monastery.

    I believe that they will eventually reaped what they sow which might eventually destroy the very fabric which they have labored and weaved for so long. I do not want to dirty my own hands.

    Your comments about structural faults in the FGS organization is not without precedent in their management.

    How can the Abbess tolerate dishonesty from her own Sangha who demand gifts from suppliers for their personal use. This group of people who also ask suppliers to inflate prices for goods sold to the temple so that they can receive kick backs has never been admonished. I have reported all these to the Abbess but I have been deemed as trying to destroy the so called Sangha in the FGS / Nan Tien Temple. As such I am a marked man. It has been made known to the Abbess but this group of people in the Sangha are the people are the Abbess personal supporters and spies.

    This is what I term as also a part of structural faults within the organization.

    I do not blame FGS for their inherent structural faults because the FGS sangha is also a collection of nuns who have given up their lay existence as a means to escape their troubled life outside. But with a better teaching structure, this could be minimized and addressed. A lot of the FGS nuns in their robes and shaven heads look upon themselves as being very knowledgeable in Buddha’s dharma and expect to be respected just because of their robes. I do not give them an inch. But I respectfully do not criticize them in the temple which is not right. In actual fact they have never given up their worldly desires even though being dressed in robes.

    If an organization is well structured and administered, there would be no such things.

    I am a Professional Chef from a Professional back ground where I have worked with Professional well run organizations and seeing all these things in a monastery which is the rightful place for propagating the Buddha’s dharma is sickening.

      Yeah, this is exactly the kind of stuff that I have been concerned about; East Asian nuns out of their depth in a multi-cultural context in which they are fundamentally unqualified to lead. The kind of high-handed thoughtlessness that you write about would not happen if any of them knew how to meditate, but their training is lacking. Ven. Xing Yun retired too early, leaving them to their own devices, and now they are completely out of hand as a whole cohort. This is exactly what the Buddha was worried about when Ananda kept asking him to allow Buddhist nuns, and why He put special conditions on them, requiring them to submit to oversight by monks.

      This Abbess is not necessarily isolated. In fact, she almost certainly has been talking to her peers and has had their support. And I’ll give you diamonds to donuts that none of them have communicated with Fo Guang Shan central in Taiwan about any of this. In general, every person involved in this could be sincere, including the Abbess, but they’ve got a really naive and subjective social process among this cohort of nuns, and NO EFFECTIVE OVERSIGHT at all.

      If I were you, I would communicate with the FGS HQ in Taiwan. That’s where all the brains gravitate to in this outfit, and they do have some competent administrative heads. That is probably the best way to get your grievances addressed effectively, and to get closure, so you aren’t a source of miscellaneous dissent and unrest loose on the planet. They can’t want that, and if I were you, I wouldn’t want it either. What I would want is to put the incident behind me and get on with my life.

    It is good that comments on your web site gets the attention of FGS and wide reader of Buddhist practitioners in the world. Something has to happen and it has got the proofed attention of FGS.

    I think constructive criticism ought to be taken in the correct light and manner and I hope FGS and Abbess Yi Lai acknowledges that there are management and structural weaknesses.

    I hope they stop the hypocrisy that they practice in the name of Dharma and Nan Tien Temple management.

    I remembered on one occassion when Abbess Yi Lai was returning on a flight from Perth to Sydney, I was instructed by Reverend JueNing and Rev You to make an egg sandwich in the kitchen for Abbess Yi Lai in full view of everyone in the kitchen. I made the egg sandwich which was later brought to the airport when Reverend You went to Kingsford airport in Sydney to pick up Abbess Yi Lai. They they later accused me using eggs in the preparation of their vegetarian meals and I hide a tray of eggs in my kitchen office.

    When I fried an egg for my 10 year old son for his breakfast, I was told it was against Nan Tien temple rules to use eggs in their kitchen. I was reprimanded b Reverend Juening. I was then told when I use eggs in my cooking, I should hide it from view. What hypocrisy.

    When I made croissant for the sangha to eat and prior to it, I told Reverend Juening that I have to use eggs for egg washing the unbaked croissant, I was told to use it when no one was in the kitchen. Tell me , is this truthful dharma?

    A copy of their internal audit report which was given to me by Abbess Yi Lai documented that I had hidden eggs in my kitchen office. which was one of the reasons for my dismissal. What a farce by Abbess Yi Lai and Reverend JueNing. I can scan this document and post it live on this web site if warranted. Let the truth come out if I am forced to show it to the world the hypocrisy practice by Nan Tien Temple.

    One worker ( wearing glasses) in the front shrine of Nan Tien Temple is from Hong Kong and has no valid visa to remain in Australia whilst one other worker, Jenny, in the kitchen who has been there for many years has no visa either to remain in Australia. They are illegals. All of them are living in the shangha housed within the Nan Tien Temple.

    If in the name of truthful dharma, why are the cash takings at the museum gift shop not recorded or purchasers given a receipt at times. Is this act against the principle of honesty in the dharma and trying to evade taxes.

    I hope Nan Tien Temple and Abbess Yi Lai takes these constructive comments and correct their inherent faults and abide by the truthful dharma and the Australian law.

    Om Mani Padme Hum.

    I am indeed very happy I found my lineage in Buddhism to practice here after being in Europe for almost four months.

    I went for a meditation retreat conducted by a Tibetan Lama and I left the meditation retreat more learned and calmer. As you mentioned after my first posting on your blog, the hurt will heal and yes I feel better and my wife and two kids discussed with me they are happier with the current sangha and people are more genuine.

    I have practice chanting the Medicine Buddha mantra daily and other mantras with my family on a daily basis and we are happier as a family. Thanks to the healing powers of the Medicine Buddha.

    My family has being blessed when we took part in a recent Medicine Buddha session conducted by a monk and we all feel that a strobe of light went through us after we chant the mantra for one hour.

    My experience so far is that the Buddhist practitioners in Europe whom we are associated with who are mainly Europeans are a more intellectual lot and genuine lot than FGS.

    I discreetly visited a FGS outfit here without revealing my identity and it is the same Asian mentality composition where you cannot question what is not right. Just “follow the herd mentality”. In their sangha here, there are no westerners except Asians. We left quietly which is the best under the circumstances. No confrontation.

    My kids who are 13 and 10 enjoy the current sangha and happily join the sangha in learning chanting of mantras and its meaning. They take the effort on their own to search the internet for mantra materials and understand the meaning of Medicine Buddha, Chenrezig and Buddha. I am impressed with the effort which they dispensed on their own without any prodding from me.

    I believe they see more calm in their Dad and love coming out that they are infected by it.

    The bitterness and battered spirit as a result of my short association with Nan Tien Temple in me has abated a little after 5 months and you are absolutely correct Buddha heals us of all these. Thank you.

    My reason of posting my latest comments on your blog yesterday was because a fellow house mate in Australia who was a serious volunteer for 10 years with Nan Tien left in absolute disgust and I understand him. I share your blog with him. He is a very much respected senior volunteer there together with his wife. He has moved on to serve another monastery with his time.

    I am not so bitter anymore except to post the so called “warning flags” to others about such inherent weakness and not to be so severely affected by what they will experienced later. I do not want others to be affected so severely and dramatically like what me and my family has gone through in their hands.

    With the abatement of the bitterness and disappointment in me and family, we continue to reach out to help others like what we have always done as a family. I am living in Europe now besides a big park and there are homeless people camped out in the woods in this cold winter and with the love and warmth in our hearts, we cook warm food from our home close by and deliver warm food to these homeless people.

    I have always believe in the spirit of helping and giving. Each time my kids see someone who is begging for food, they will dish out a coin on their own to help them. It is the correct spirit of giving and helping that hopefully we will be blessed. If I have give and help others and I am not blessed, it is fine as long as my kids are blessed, protected and safe, I am happy.

    FGS cannot afford to have all these negative publicity and cannot continue to treat people in this way under the guise of the deviational Dharma they preach. I am happy your blog finally has proofed attention of FGS internal communications. You have done the international shangha a great favour. I forgive through the passage of time and healing from Medicine Buddha. No amount of money will compensate the hypocrisy and high handedness they dispensed to hurt my family and others who have taken it meekly. Chanting the Medicine Buddha mantra does heal us as a family.

    I am happy to see my kids use the mala in chanting the Medicine Buddha mantra. I cannot ask for more than what Medicine Buddha has done for us in the short time we found our Dharma lineage in which to practice the Dharma.

    Many of my former staff in Nan Tien who are still there still warmly phone me from Australia asking if they could join me in work in Paris and this is testimony to the warmth and care I extended to them as my staff when I was there. Making international calls from Australia to France is so expensive yet they do so every now and then. I am being told that many the good practices I instilled for my former staff are still being practice at Nan Tien which goes to demonstrate that something I did was right indeed. I am flattered.

    Whoever in FGS who is trying to track me down must be so afraid of me spilling the dirty linens on the internet. If you are thoroughly cleansed, why is a large organization like FGS so afraid of a small guy like me. Perhaps they now know they are dealing with a different breed of Asian like me who is so vocal and educated. And that is their fear that I have the means of communication to expose their weakness and deviational teachings.

    Even if they choose to compensate me now and keep me quiet, I will donate it to my favourite charity or favourite cause in my present Dharma lineage to enable the spreading of the truthful dharma even further.

    Xing Ping, I agree with your comments to Huixi, the internal FGS communications that she is right to send the original posting from me to Abbess Yi Lai to address it for she has done it to many people who are not as vocal as me and who choose to walk away and keep quiet to commensurate with the Asian mentality of “no opposition”.

    Someday when things are better with me and family and we have settled down considerably, I would like to come to America and visit you and your sangha to learn more. It is in searching and mixing with other sanghas that we become a better Dharma practitioner and hopefully achieved enlightenment.

    Let there be more searches about me for I have not done anything wrong but to speak the truth. It goes to show something I wrote is right and it is hurting them and perhaps they are trying to correct it.

    This week, we had a serious practice and teaching regards Medicine Buddha and it was so healing and brought a lot of warmth to my family’s heart because my whole family attended the session.

    Each day we chant the Medicine Buddha mantra together as a family and pray that healing will be received by my family to help us overcome the disappointment and aghast treatment at FGS.

    Thank you for encouraging us to focus on Medicine Buddha which is the epitome of engaged Buddhism.

    This discussion thread or posting on this blog, which has hit counts higher than the rest of this site put together is what I would believe searches from existing FGS followers whom I have shared your blog with and who then have forwarded the link onto other fellow FGS friends and also from internal FGS people.

    Consecutively, there are also former FGS followers who have been forwarded the link to this blog who are still disgusted about the treatment they received at the hands of Nan Tien Temple (NTT) / FGS and who are following this link to read updates I may post on this blog.

    There have been hundreds of people I have forwarded your blog link to and I believe they are happy about this.

    Many former FGS followers and present FGS followers probably are not fluent in written English but can understand simple reading and perhaps are not so out spoken about their ill treatment and disillusion at FGS or perhaps they are secretly smiling that finally someone out there is brave enough to write about the inherent weakness of FGS and the crude, harsh and unrefined mannerism of this cohort of nuns who run this outfit like their own lawless kingdom almost similar to the lawless warlords in the Philippines.

    Some of the former FGS followers are not conversant in spoken or written English and as such you will be doing the international sangha a fantastic favour by translating this discussion thread into Chinese. I believe after you do so, the hits will multiply at an astronomical rate.

    I will continue to post what I know intricately about FGS / NTT on this blog until they see fit to correct them and as a “warning flag” to many other interested to join FGS such that they do not follow FGS blindly.

    This is contrary to what people think that I am bent on destroying the fabric of FGS but my intention is to draw the higher up heirachy in FGS Taiwan HQ to all these weaknesses in their overseas branches which often have never been communicated back to the FGA Taiwan HQ or just been covered up by the respective Abbess in their beautifully written report to the FGS Taiwan HQ painting a picture of bliss that everything is alright and their sangha is ever growing albeit any mention of problems.

    If FGS is humble enough to correct these inherent weakness, then I will play a huge part in bringing more believers to their cause worldwide through my vast airline network.

    I have led some of the former followers to learn about Medicine Buddha and am glad the smiles are back on their face.

    Xing Ping, kindly allow your readers to share what I have learnt below and I believe this beautiful teaching will soothe many hearts hurt or disillusioned:

    Vimalakirti’s illness

    One of the most beautiful Mahayana statements is found in the Vimala,kirti Nirdesa (The Teaching of Vimala,kirti). In chapter 5, the layman bodhisattva Vimala,kirti lies sick, and is visited by a big group of holy beings, headed by Manjusri. When Manjusri asks why he is sick, Vimalakirti replies,

    “Manjusri, as long as there are ignorance and the thirst for existence, there is this illness of mine. As long as all beings are sick, there is this illness of mine. Were all living beings free from illness, then I too would not be sick.

    What is the reason for this? Manjusri, a bodhisattva remains in samsara for the sake of living beings; for samsara itself is an illness. Were all living beings free of illness, the bodhisattva too would be free of illness.

    For example, Manjusri, when the seth’s only son is sick, both his parents become sick, too. And the parents will suffer as long as their only son has not recovered. Even so, Manjusri, the bodhisattva loves all living beings as if each were his only child. He becomes sick when they are sick; when they recover, he recovers.”

    Manjusri asks, “Where does your illness come from?”

    “The illness of the bodhisattvas arises from great compassion.” ( translation from the Sanskrit)

    Like any Buddhist text, we should experience these words. The best way is to take one of the roles, either Manjusri or Vimala,kirti. This helps in our feeling the sense of the passage. In the end, they are the same: here, Manjusri is our inquiring mind; Vimala,kirti is our higher wisdom. We are the bodhisattvas.

    When we ask ourselves a Dharma question, it will answer itself if we listen hard enough. This is a dialogue of the heart and mind.

    We are not truly a Buddhist if we do not feel suffering; that is, our own sufferings and those of others. Just as the four elements (earth, water, fire and wind) inside us and the four elements outside us are the same elements, even so, our sufferings and those of others are the same. Only selfishness makes us think that they are different. This is spiritual wisdom.

    When we understand that how we suffer is the same as how others suffer, we appreciate the being of others, that they are in real pain, too. And we would meaningfully respond to the pains of others. We then have active and wise compassion.

    The suffering of someone hit by a tsunami or an earthquake is no different from the pains of someone near us who has lost his job, or going through a divorce, or some other personal problem. Natural disasters happen all the time somewhere on our planet. We tend to be shocked because of their scale.

    If we are truly and wisely compassionate, we understand that the pains of those who have lost loved ones, homes, and property, are the same as those who are suffering silently in loneliness, or in illness, or with some problems here in our midst. My point is that the magnitude of suffering cannot really be compared or measured, even between two individuals.

    It is often subjective, that is, it is our bias, that makes us think which people need more help or which suffering is bigger than another. Maybe we feel more important helping those in bigger disasters, but those suffering poverty near us are not as important: this is not true compassion.

    We should first respond to the pains of those nearest to us because they are within our reach to help. It would be rather improper if we let those near us suffer, and we go way far out to help others. As a Malay saying goes: “Milking a monkey in the forest, but our child at home dies of starvation” (Monyet di hutan disusukan, anak sendiri di rumah mati kelaparan).

    Of course, with more of us working together in wisdom and compassion, we can cover a wider area to help more of those suffering.

    All those who are suffering are like our children. This means that if one of our children is recovering from an accident, and another suffering from a fever, we would still attend to both of them as if each is our only son. Compassion means never comparing or measuring how people suffer, but knowing that they are suffering, and responding accordingly.

    Nor should we be slow in helping others. For, charity delayed is charity denied.

    To have great compassion means to always keep in mind, thus:

    “Let no one suffer in my midst! Let no one suffer if I can help it. Let no one far or near suffer! I will never tell a suffering person, ‘It’s all right.’ Instead, I will ask, ‘Why are you suffering? How can I help?’ And I will act on it.

    For, my pains arise from great compassion. My pains push me to share and to give. Let me not give till it hurts, but rather let me give till I cry in joy.”

    My fellow former FGS friends worldwide will be happy to read this teaching on your blog. Let the great hearts of compassion and wisdom arise from all corners of the globe.

      Sunday is my temple day. I’m going to Fo Guang Shan Honolulu Center, to chant sutra and venerate the Buddha, and also to find out what new and universally not-cared-for attitude the Abbess may have affected towards me.
